Symptoms of Vascular Dementia
- An initial symptom of vascular dementia is difficulty with mental organization and relating chronological events, or consecutive thoughts and ideas, to others (see Resources).
- Memory and language problems may not be immediately evident as a primary symptom in cases of vascular dementia as they are with Alzheimer's disease, but VaD and Alzheimer's can be concurrent (see Resources).
- Changes in behavior affecting mood and causing apathy or irritability can occur. As with other forms of dementia, symptoms of depression or delusional behavior can also be evident in vascular dementia (see Resources).
- Difficulty with motor functions may occur and result in problems with walking. Because diminishing motor functions interfere with balance, there is a danger of injury from falls (see Resources).
- Depending on the cause and severity of blood flow interruption, symptoms can appear gradually or as a sudden loss of a particular function (or group of functions) due to the death of a large number of brain cells (see Resources).
