Short Term Memory Loss Due to Stroke
- Loss of short term memory is common with people who have had a stroke. Short term memory is the type of memory that we use for daily things, such as remembering why we went to the kitchen, how to do a simple daily task or who you saw an hour ago.
- Short term memory loss can look like confusion. When a stroke survivor has short term memory loss they may get confused as to the order of doing simple tasks.
- Short term memory loss from stroke may cause the survivor to even forget how to do things they have done over and over again before. They may think they know how to do something, but forget how to begin.
- Some short term memory loss may appear in the form of not understanding simple concepts. Usually this problem can be corrected with rehabilitation therapy.
- Many complications from stroke, including most short term memory problems, can be helped with good rehabilitation therapy, lots of hard work and persistence in routines. Improvement may depend on how severe the stroke was, and how much damage it caused.
