- 1). Obtain the control's CLSID. This is a unique alphanumeric sequence that identifies the control. Contact the control's manufacturer and ask for the CLSID; if that doesn't work, try the approach listed in "Tips."
- 2). Open the Registry Editor. In Windows Vista and 7, click "Start," type "regedit" and press "Enter." In Windows XP, click "Start," then "Run," then enter "regedit."
- 3). Use the left pane to navigate to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\" registry key. Click the plus sign next to "ActiveX Compatibility" to expand it and reveal all its subkeys.
- 4). Check for a subkey with the CLSID of the control you want to kill. Typically, it won't exist yet and you'll have to create it. Right-click in the left pane and select "New," then "Key." Use the control's CLSID for the key's name -- make sure it's typed exactly right.
- 5). Click the new key, then right-click in the right pane and select "New," then "DWORD Value." Name this value "Compatibility Flags" (without the quotes). Double-click the created value, enter "0x00000400" as its contents and press "Enter." Close the Registry Editor. The ActiveX control has been killed.
