We Can Land on a Comet, But It Takes 2-3 Weeks to Ship a New iMac

After watching the European Space Agency's Philae Lander touchdown on Comet 67P yesterday, I was all set to say we can do anything if we put our minds to it. But some Twitter users responded to the news by indulging in the hashtag #WeCanLandOnACometButWeCant…

So, to add my own comment to the list:

We Can Land on a Comet But We Can't Get Apple to Deliver a New iMac with Retina 5K Display in Less Than 2-3 Weeks

When Apple first announced the new Retina-equipped iMac, shipping times were in the range of 3 to 5 days.

The shipping times then slowly started slipping out, first to 7 to 10 days, and now to 2 to 3 weeks. And these are the stock configurations; if you want to customize the new iMac, the wait will be a bit longer.

The importance of this isn't that Apple is having problems with order fulfillment, which it seems to have on many new products, but that the shipping time frame may well mean that getting one of the new iMacs in time for Christmas means you need to place your order now and not later.

Using the current shipping estimates, and allowing for holidays, if you ordered a new iMac today (November 13), it would arrive on your doorstep in the second week of December (8 through 12).

The rest of Apple's Mac lineup, including non-Retina iMacs. is showing as in stock for standard configurations. So, there shouldn't be any worries for any of the other Mac models. If orders for the Retina iMac don't return to a more normal fulfillment time, the cutoff for guaranteed arrival before Christmas may be as early as December 3rd.

If you're considering a Retina iMac for Christmas, I wouldn't delay ordering it for much longer.

Now, back to Rosetta and the Philae probe: Congratulations to everyone involved!
