Two Biggest Tips to Make a Burglar Alarm More Effective
Quite often people will place the main wireless control panel on the wall close to the rear door or in the hallway near to the front door.
The idea being that it will be easy to switch on and off when they leave or enter the premises.
There is nothing wrong with this idea from the point of view of ease of use, but this could render the alarm system vulnerable, should an intruder break into the house through the door.
If the door is forced open, the control panel cannot of course distinguish the fact that it is a burglar rather than the owner of the property and the incoming timer will be activated.
In normal circumstances, this allows time for the owner to switch the system off using the security number but, in the case of an intruder entering, the sound emitting from the panel enables the intruder to quickly find and damage the control panel before the system enters alarm condition i.
e.
no siren box warning sound or auto dialler telephone warning message.
The solution, to ensure less likelihood of this situation arising, is to locate the wireless alarm panel in a place in which it cannot easily be found by an intruder.
For example, around a corner in the kitchen area; upstairs in a location which is very hard to access i.
e the back of a cupboard; or under an office table.
Any place which would be difficult to access quickly.
If the system's programming permits, it may also be a good idea to disable the entry sounder, thus ensuring no audible indication as to the panel's location.
Obviously, the occupants of the premises may not wish to walk upstairs to disarm the system every time they enter their home.
The solution is to put a secondary wireless control keypad downstairs near the door of entry, which could arm and disarm the system but would not render the system inactive if damaged by an intruder.
This would incur the extra cost of buying a second wireless control keypad but would render the system very safe and effective.
My second main tip to make a wireless security alarm more effective is to realise that the vast majority of burglaries happen with a point of entry at the rear of the property.
Most houses are more secluded and quiet at the rear; thereby much safer for a burglar.
The front of the house is usually a much more risky location to try and break into, with front doors usually visible to passers-by, neighbours, etc.
and with living room windows facing opposite houses.
If there are patio doors at the rear of the property, these are by far the most vulnerable point of entry for burglars.
It is, therefore, wise to make sure these doors are as safe as possible.
It can be a very good security measure to have a magnetic contact or a wireless shock sensor installed on patio doors, so that if these are targeted by intruders, the security alarm will go into alarm condition much more quickly.
So, to sum up, to increase the reliability and effectiveness of an alarm system, simply make sure that: a) the control panel which triggers the alarm system is in a location where it cannot be attacked quickly and easily; and b) that the rear rooms of the property are well protected by the alarm system.
