How to Install a Chimney Wind Cap
- 1). Inspect and measure the chimney flue lining to determine what type of wind cap to use. Flash a light down the flue to make sure no obstructions, such as raccoons or birds' nests, are inside.
- 2). Prep the wind cap to be placed over the flue opening. Depending on the type of wind cap you're installing, you may need to back out the lock fasteners, assemble portions of the wind cap and measure the wind cap base to make sure it will either fit into or over the flue.
- 3). Place a 1/2-inch bead of a silicone or tar seal around the base of the wind cap where it will make contact with the chimney flue.
- 4). Set the wind cap over the flue. Slide it either inside or over the top edge of the flue, depending on your model, until it sits flush. Check the seal to make sure it made a direct contact with the chimney flue.
- 5). Tighten the locking fasteners located around the base of the wind cap until they are pressed tightly against the flue. Test the wind cap to make sure it is secured tightly in place.
