How to Type a Petition
Things You'll Need
Instructions
1Identify your target. This means deciding to whom you will eventually give the signed petition. Although you know the topic of the petition, you may not know who has jurisdiction over the topic. This might include a business, government official or government body.
2
Open a new Word document by double-clicking the icon on the desktop or finding it under the Start menu. Change the font to 12-point Times New Roman, if necessary. Write the date and press enter twice. Type the name of the petition and center the text. Press enter twice again and left-align the text.
3
Describe the problem the petition addresses. Be concise and clear. Provide enough background so the person signing or receiving the petition can understand the problem fully. This should take one to three paragraphs.
4
Outline the solution to the problem. When people sign the petition, they are saying they support this solution. Explain the solution clearly and fully. This should take one to three paragraphs.
5
Highlight all the text after the title. Find the "Justify Text" button on the tool bar. This will make the paragraphs look more professional. You can choose whether you want to indent each paragraph or not. If you don't indent, leave a space between each paragraph.
6
Create lines for petitioners to sign by pressing "Ctrl + u" and then pressing the tab button multiple times. You can create lines that stretch across the page or organize them into two columns by leaving a space in the middle between each side. Simply highlight the portion you want to leave as a gap and press "Ctrl + u" again.
7
Save the document by pressing "Ctrl + s." Choose the place and name of the document. Press "Save."
