How to Defrag Remote Volumes

    Defrag Using the "Start" Menu.

    • 1). Go to the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your Windows desktop. In the search box, type "Disk Defragmenter." "Disk Defragmenter" should pop up at the top of the list after you type "Disk."

    • 2). Click "Disk Defragmenter" from the list of results. Under "Current Status," select the disk you want to defragment.

    • 3). Click the "Defragment Now" bar. The Disk Defragmenter window will open with a list of the hard drives associated with your computer. If the remote disk you wish to defrag does not appear, check the connections and power supply of that disk.

    • 4). Click on the name of the disk you wish to defragment. Make sure to deselect other drives associated with the computer if you do not wish to defrag them at this time. The defragmentation process begins automatically. Depending on the size of the drive and amount of data on it, the defrag will take from a few minutes to several hours. You can continue to work on your computer while the Windows defrags your remote disk.

    Using Right-clicking

    • 1). Click "Start" in the lower left-hand corner of your Windows screen. When the Start Menu appears, scroll up and click "Computer." The "Computer" window opens.

    • 2). Right-click on the remote drive connected to your computer that you want to defrag.

    • 3). Scroll down to "Properties" from the drop-down menu. In the Properties window that opens, click on the "Tools" tab in the second row of tabs at the top.

    • 4). Click "Defragment Now," the second bar in the list of three choices. Windows will start the defrag process on your remote drive.

    • 5). Continue working on your computer during the process. Disk defragmentation can take minutes or hours. You can leave the computer to defrag on its own.
