Songwriting For Beginners on Guitar - Get Past Songwriters Block

103 1
Once you've created a tune that you're happy with you've then got to convert it into a good sounding, complete song.
You may even have a singing line, a melody, a verse or chorus and so you feel that the song is coming together.
It's now time to start thinking about a lyric and title for your masterpiece.
You hit the coffee, settle down in your comfortable chair and you're thinking that you're going to scribble down some great lyrics.
After all, you've done the hard bit haven't you? All you need is a theme and the words will just flow! So the coffee get drunk, then pen gets chewed a little, an hour flies by and you're still staring at your blank sheet of paper.
And you thought this was the easy bit! So the next drink goes down, the pen gets another chew, more staring into space and still nothing to show.
"OK, maybe I'm just not in lyric mode today after all" you think to yourself.
"I'll try again tomorrow.
" We've all been there and this is generally what's known as writers block.
I once went a whole 2 week vacation with writers block.
Got through plenty of coffee in those couple of weeks:) So how to get beyond it.
Well, some people would say that you cannot be taught to write songs and lyrics.
I don't agree however because I've 'learned' how to do it and I very rarely become stuck for words anymore.
That's not to say that some people find it easier than others.
Like any create process, some people do simply have a talent for it, but if you stick to certain techniques, and practice your lyric writing then it does get easier.
Here are some easy ways to get around writers block:
  • Try to write words that people can identify with and give a simple message
  • Although you can use a few cliches try to limit the number and rethink a cliche into your own words
  • Lines don't necessarily have to rhyme and sometimes forcing rhymes can affect singability
  • Try telling a story in the past tense.
It's much easier to write about something that has already happened
  • Try Writing about something that is going on right now.
It could be a scenario that is happening to you, a friend or a family member
  • Try writing about something that could occur in the future.
Perhaps if you came into money, or if your partner had an affair.
Write about how this might pan out
That should give you plenty to go on to get you started.
Don't forget, practicing makes a big difference.
