How to Re-Wick Bristol Kerosene Lamps

104 6
    • 1). Remove the glass chimney from the Bristol kerosene lamp by gently lifting it up until the side metal clips give way. Set the glass chimney to the side.

    • 2). Pull the old wick downward to remove from the wick holder.

    • 3). Push the metal cap, located over the wick holder, up and to the side.

    • 4). Trim the top tip of the replacement wick by slightly cutting off the corners and rounding the top. The wick will burn with excessive smoke if you trim it straight across and may give off too little light if you make it too pointy.

    • 5). Push the replacement wick up into the spot from which the old wick was removed. Pull the replacement wick up and onto the burner sleeve until it is about 1/8 inch over this piece.

    • 6). Place the metal cap back over the wick holder and snap it into place over the wick.

    • 7). Replace the glass chimney by placing it back toward the inside of the metal clips. Push down until the metal clips snap firmly over it.

    • 8). Soak the wick in the kerosene for at least 15 minutes before lighting the lamp. This will allow the wick to soak up the kerosene.
