How to Build a Wooden Terrarium
- 1). Remove the glass and backings from the frames. Sand the wood. The backings can be discarded or saved for another project.
- 2). Screw one 8-by-10 and one 11-by-14 frame together so they make one end and one side of the terrarium base. Repeat with the other 8-by-10 and 11-by-14 frames. You will have two L shape sections now. Screw the two Ls together so they make a rectangle. This is the base of the terrarium.
- 3). Lay two of the 5-by-7 frames end to end. Place a 2 inch mending plate at each side of the place where the two meet and attach with screws. Repeat with the other two 5-by-7 frames. Set the two sections so that they make an L shape and attach with end brackets at each end. This is the roof of the terrarium. When placed on the frame it will create a pitched roof.
- 4). Lay the body of the terrarium on its side and align a long side of the frame with a long side of the body. Attach with two small hinges, one on each side and one in the center. Set the terrarium upright. The lid should open and close on its hinges.
- 5). Trace the triangular opening at the ends of the roof using a pencil and a piece of cardboard. Use these patterns to cut triangle pieces from 1/2 inch thick plywood. Secure the wood pieces in place on the roof with wood screws.
- 6). Fill the joints and screw holes on the terrarium with joint compound and sand to smooth after dry. Remove all sand dust. Paint the terrarium frame as desired.
- 7). Apply hot glue in the inside corners of one frame. Insert the glass pane and hot glue around the edges to hold in place. Repeat on all frames. The terrarium is finished. Set it over houseplants or pots of herbs.
