    • 1). Gather your required information. You need to have information regarding your hours and places of employment for the last year as well as information on why you stopped working for your last employer. Also, have your Social Security number on hand.

    • 2). Access your Internet browser and go to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Employment Security website (see Resources). Click on "Apply for Unemployment" and follow the instructions to complete your claim. You must include detailed information on your work history and your reasons for losing your job. You also have to provide information on your ability to look for work. Print your confirmation page after completing the online application. You can only access this application between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. (Central Standard Time) from Monday to Friday and between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. (CST) on Sunday.

    • 3). Certify your eligibility. Once you have filed your unemployment claim, you must certify your eligibility to receive benefits on the Sunday or Monday after you file your initial claim. You can do this by calling the Telephone Information and Payments System (TIPS) at 800-689-9799 or by going to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Employment Security website and clicking on "Online Services." When you first certify your eligibility, you must choose a PIN, which you will use for your weekly eligibility certification in the future. You are required to certify your eligibility over the TIPS line or online every week to continue receiving unemployment insurance benefits. When you certify your eligibility, you must answer a number of questions regarding your availability to work and and any income you may be receiving.
