One of the best ways to get help with ADHD is to actually organize our homes in an ADHD friendly way. Many parents cannot be bothered to do this and part of the reason is that they have ADHD themselves and organizing and getting rid of clutter is a real challenge. Here are some ideas  for helping kids with ADHD.

I know some adults who got help with ADHD by installing a computer program which sends them reminders and alerts every time a deadline or appointment is imminent.  We can help our children in similar ways. Having post its and reminders in prominent places can be a help.

I know other adults who use an in/out drawer system at home so that when they arrive, they put all their documents and things in that drawer. When they have to leave for work, they know where to find things easily and there is no danger in things getting lost around the house.

Organizing an ADHD friendly home where there is the minimum of clutter is a great idea. Kids know where to find things and they can be encouraged and rewarded for putting things in their place. Limiting choices as to what they have to wear is a great idea too as that can reduce tension in getting ready for school.

Structure and routine is also important so that meal times and other activities all happen at the same time every day, within reason. Sudden changes of plans are out. If changes are necessary we have to alert kids to these well in advance.  Giving reminders often can help too to prepare them for the change in routine.

Distraction is the great enemy for people with ADHD. Their sensory overload is enormous and their filtering capacity is severely limited which is one of the reasons why we have to break down instructions for them.  That can help with ADHD because it can assist in focus and concentration.

This is another reason why clutter can really be a challenge for a person with ADHD.  Clutter increases distractability and that is why homework will take ages. Stability balls can help the hyperactive child too in that secondary movement and minor fidgeting can actually help them to concentrate and keep attention levels high. This is much more practical than telling them to sit still and concentrate. I wonder how many teachers actually know this.

These are just a few ways we can help with ADHD. We can help in other ways by implementing a behavior modification program or simply more effective parenting skills. Once we start doing this and using a homeopathic remedy, we are well on the way to devising a really effective treatment plan. Why wait any longer?
