- 1). Provide the bird of paradise with full sunlight. To bloom the plant must have six hours of sunlight per day. Plants grown indoors often require a grow light to successfully bloom.
- 2). Mist the plant daily, especially in the spring and summer. Lack of humidity can often inhibit blooming.
- 3). Do not re-pot or transplant the bird of paradise too often. The plant actually prefers being somewhat root-bound. The plant will take up to four years to bloom after re-potting or transplanting
- 4). Water during the spring and summer often to keep the soil consistently moist. In the wintertime, however, water only when the soil dries out completely.This will encourage the natural cycle of growth and dormancy.
- 5). Lightly cover the roots of the bird of paradise; an inch of soil is usually adequate. If the roots are planted too deeply the plant is less likely to bloom.
- 6). Fertilize the bird of paradise every two weeks in spring and summer with a water-soluble 2-2-10 fertilizer following the directions on the fertilizer label. Choosing a fertilizer that is high in potassium will aid in blossom production.
In the winter fertilize the bird of paradise once a month using a basic 8-8-8 water- soluble plant food fertilizer by following the directions on the label.
