Asthma - Respiratory Condition Which Can Be Managed With Proper Treatment
Asthma is a condition where there is inflammation in the respiratory airways.
This causes shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing.
The respiratory airways are responsible for the entry and exit of the air to the lungs.
Any obstruction in these airways causes problems since the oxygen will not be able to reach the lungs.
This would also mean that there would be a rise in the carbon dioxide levels in the blood.
Asthma is mainly of two types namely extrinsic and intrinsic.
Extrinsic asthma is mainly associated with allergies.
It is mainly caused by allergens like certain foods like fish, soy and peanuts, seasonal pollen grains and certain drugs.
While intrinsic asthma is normally seen after the age of 30 and it is not dependent on allergens.
There are a number of allergens that are known to cause or trigger an asthmatic attack.
What one needs to understand is that this is a condition which can be controlled and managed well with treatment.
Though there is no permanent cure to this condition however, one can control and manage this condition by avoiding allergens and irritants which can give rise to an asthmatic attack.
Medication is of two types, one is bronchodilators which are used to reduce the incidences of the bronchospasm.
The other is the use of anti-inflammatory drugs.
Bronchodilators are used all over the world to control and manage sudden attacks.
These act directly on the beta receptors and hence have a quick effect.
However, the anti-inflammatory drugs are useful only when taken regularly and they do not help in averting a sudden asthmatic attack.
In short, one needs to understand that with proper management one can keep asthma at bay.
