My Gateway FX4710 Is Overheating

FX4710 Cooling System

• Your Gateway FX4710 desktop encourages a cool tower interior through internal fans and numerous vent holes drilled in the back of the metal casing. Unlike laptop computers, desktop systems offer the added cooling factor of air space, as the internal components are spaced apart enough to allow air flow between them. This helps prevent the build-up of heat created through normal operation.
  
  

Blocked Vents

• Many desktop computer desks offer an enclosed cabinet for computer tower storage, which can block the air vents in the back from venting the heat properly. This same blockage can occur by placing your Gateway's tower against a wall or other solid object. Always allow enough space around your tower to encourage proper airflow and prevent overheating.
  
  

Location

• Environmental factors can increase the likelihood of your computer overheating. The heat created by heating vents, personal heaters and fireplaces add to the heat your computer already produces, increasing the possibility of overheating. Move your tower away from any outside heat sources, including direct sunlight, to keep your computer running cool.
  
  

Dirty Computer

• Every home has airborne dust, hair and lint floating around, and this tiny debris can collect on the inside of your computer tower. This accumulated dirt reduces the effectiveness of your internal fans, and makes the rest of your components work harder due to the “insulating” layer of dirt caked on them. Remove the left side tower cover of your FX4710 by unscrewing the two securing screws on the back of the system. Use a lint-free cloth, rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs to carefully and thoroughly clean your Gateway of any dust or grime.
  
  

Working Too Hard

• Your Gateway generates heat as it operates and the harder it works the more heat it creates. If you are overtaxing the processor by running multiple processor-intensive programs, or have many accessories and external devices connected, this may prove too much for the FX4710 to handle properly. Close any unused programs and disconnect unused peripheral devices to ease the workload of the computer.
