    • Standing at the side of physicians and nurses throughout Indiana, the state's 10,650 medical assistants earned an average salary of $27,020, which was slightly below the national average of $29,450, per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The range for the state included Indiana's highest-paid medical assistants, earning $35,380 in the 90th percentile, and $20,750 in the 10th percentile.

    Top-Paid Assistants

    • While Indiana's average medical assistant salary fell under the national figure, certain areas of the state did pay salaries at higher than average, although no cities had an average higher than the national average. The top-paying area for medical assistant salaries was Anderson, coming close to the national average at $29,050. The Indianapolis-Carmel areas also had higher-than-average salaries of $28,920, followed by medical assistants in Kokomo, receiving $28,330. Medical assistants in Lafayette earned the state's highest 90th percentile salaries, at $37,810, followed by Kokomo at $37,650 and Indianapolis-Carmel, at $37,580.

    Lowest-Paying Areas

    • Receiving the lowest average salaries in the state of Indiana were workers in Gary, earning $24,870, followed by the Evansville medical assistants earning $24,930. Evansville also had the lowest 10th percentile salaries in the state, at $17,780, followed by Gary at $18,470 and Muncie, at $19,660.

    Prep for the Field

    • Although Indiana and all of the other states in the country have no requirements for persons entering the medical assistant field (such as degree or experience), prospective medical assistants do have hundreds of opportunities to earn short-term certificates and diplomas or two-year associate's degrees in medical assisting through one of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs' 588 accredited schools. In-state schooling is not necessary, but Indiana is home to 35 accredited institutions, including Ivy Tech Community College (multiple locations), Harrison College (multiple locations), National College-Indianapolis and Brown Mackie College.
