How to Test Blood Type at Home
- 1). Purchase a blood-typing kit such as is shown on healthestingathome.com, verilife.com, 4yourlife.com or any reputable health product retailer. Kits should contain one test card, four sticks to hold blood drops, one results chart, one alcohol swab, two lancets and one dropper. Unpack and identify all necessary components.
- 2). Wash your hands to prevent contamination of the blood sample and also to prevent contamination of the small cut that will be made on your finger.
- 3). Put some water in a glass and draw out a small amount using the dropper. Test cards will have up to four circular fields for typing blood. Put one drop of water on each circle to mix with the chemicals imprinted in the circle.
- 4). Disinfect the finger to be tested using the alcohol pad. This step should be done just before the lancet is used.
- 5). Hold the lancet against the finger tip firmly. It will release automatically and create a small nick in your finger. The lancet is for one use only. Lancet types may vary from one kit to the next.
- 6). Massage your finger toward the fingertip to encourage blood droplets to be expressed. Collect one drop in each of the sticks provided for blood collection.
- 7). Stir each stick inside one of the circles on the test card for 10 seconds. Make sure you spread the blood drop to the edge of the circle. Use one drop of blood and one stick for each circle.
- 8). Tilt the test card carefully for 10 seconds in one direction and then 10 seconds in the other direction to allow the red blood cells to move to the bottom of the liquid. Do not allow the liquid from adjacent circles to mix.
- 9). Interpret your results using the results chart that was included in your kit.
