DIY Mole Control

    • 1). Purchase a mole trap at a local hardware store for the most effective mole control. Be mindful that scissor traps, largely thought to be the best form of mole control, are outlawed in some states.

    • 2). Find an entrance into the mole's underground tunnel network. Look for a deep hole, as moles will create many entrances and exits as they use new burrows over time.

    • 3). Dig out a section of soil approximately 18 inches away from the entrance and 6 inches wide. When the shovel hits no resistance, you've found the tunnel.

    • 4). Remove the section of soil you've dug and place the trap into the burrow. Avoid disturbing the inside of the tunnel or the area immediately outside it. If moles sense that their tunnels have been disturbed, they will simply dig new routes.

    • 5). Set the trap per the directions. Scissor and harpoon traps will be set with a small plug of soil on the trigger pan.

    • 6). Cover the trap with loose soil, enough to reach the top of the tunnel.

    • 7). Release the safety on the trap. Mole traps, like many mole control methods, are designed to kill. Check the trap once or twice a day to see if it does its job, and remove the carcass and trap promptly when it is successful.

    • 8). Place household items such as human hair, bleach, mothballs and castor oil in the burrow to drive moles away or kill them as an alternate to traps. Home remedies are not as effective as traps, and in some cases they are less humane.
