How to Safely Get Rid of Rats & Mice When You Have Pets in Your Home
- 1). Get mice and rats out of your home by selecting one of these pet-friendly options. Use a nonlethal trap to trap the rodents. Make sure your pets can't get into it or be affected by it's operation. Use an organic product that kills rats and mice but is still safe to use around pets. Contact an exterminator and discuss creating a pest removal program that is safe in a pet owner's household.
- 2). Seal your home against rats and mice by creating a list of possible holes where the rodents can get in. These include water pipes, gas pipes, breaks or cracks in concrete foundations, and any small but open points of entry. Seal all of the holes on the list with a foam sealant, flashing, silicone, or concrete sealer. Fill every hole no matter how small it is.
- 3). Dispose of the rodents caught in your home wisely. Empty your live trap as far from your home as practical. Rodents will seek a warm place to forage, and they can get into the smallest opening in your home. To keep them out, be sure to include caulking in your spring and fall maintenance routines.
