- 1). Verify that you meet all the requirements to receive a notary public commission. Every applicant must meet the following criteria: U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien, Illinois residency for at least 30 days, at least age 18, no felony convictions, fluent in reading and writing English and no previous notary commission revocations.
- 2). Purchase a $5,000 surety bond from an authorized notary bonding company. You must be listed as the principal/applicant. The bond must contain the corporate seal of the company and a signature of an authorized representative. The surety bond submitted with your application cannot be a copy. It must contain the original signature.
- 3). Complete the notary public application. The following information is required on the notary application: name, address, employer, driver’s license number, date of birth, application type, county or residence, and telephone number. The applicant must swear and sign the notarial oath before a commissioned notary. The applicant and his bonding company must sign the notary public bond section.

Once your commission is processed by the secretary of state, it is sent to the clerk in the applicant’s county of residence. You will receive notification from the county clerk regarding your commission status. You can appear before the county clerk to receive your commission and pay the $5 fee, or you can request your commission be completed by mail and pay the $10 fee.
- 6). Purchase a notary seal. You should contact your notary bonding company to see whether you can purchase your seal from them. Alternatively, you can contact a stamp and office supply store to order one from them. The seal must contain the words “official seal,” “notary public,” “State of Illinois” and “My commission expires _________ (commission expiration date).” A serrated-edge border must appear around the stamped image, and the stamp must contain the notary’s official name.
