How to Prune Frontenac Grape Vines

104 5
    • 1). Prune the Frontenac vines when they are in their dormant stage. This time frame will vary slightly depending on your location, but usually you can prune effectively in the early spring. Do not prune the Frontenac vines if they are only a year old, unless there are diseased vines. Cut any diseased or dead vines away from the cane with hand pruners or loppers.

    • 2). Prune 40 to 50 shoots per vine when the grapevine is in its second year. Leave 30 nodes behind for the first pound of cane that you remove, plus an additional 10 nodes for every additional pound of cane you prune away. Remove the canes with pruning shears, cutting them approximately 1/8 inch from the main, or parent, cane.

    • 3). Cut away all excess leaves, as they can shade the vines and prevent the fruit from ripening.

    • 4). Retain all healthy canes and canes that grow in direct sunlight. These canes will produce the most grape clusters. Do not get rid of them, even if it makes the vine look unbalanced.
