My opinion is that the longer you can avoid taking any type of medication, the better and the natural way is best.
The natural way would mean a complete lifestyle overhaul.
But even if you opt for medication some of your old habits would have to change.
Once again you must pay attention to your doctor's advice and the first things he will comment on are smoking, diet and exercise.
For instance, do you smoke, how much alcohol do you consume, what is your diet and do you exercise regularly? These are all vital questions your doctor will ask.
In some cases you can lie to your doctor but in reality you are only lying to yourself.
Your task of reducing high blood pressure lies solely with yourself and only you can choose the route you want to take.
Your doctor can only advise you.
Therefore there has got to be determination and willpower on your part.
Smoking: Give it up.
There is no other option.
Alcohol: Cut down if you need to and ensure you do not exceed the recommended 2 units per day.
Diet: Cut down fatty, processed foods.
Reduce your salt intake.
Add herbs while cooking instead of salt.
Grill meat instead of frying.
Use low fat dairy products.
Eat fresh fruit instead of cakes or biscuits.
Drink plenty of water.
Exercise: If you have not been too active, your doctor will need to advise you on the best type of exercise that will benefit you.
We are not talking about running marathons here but a leisurely walk for about 30 minutes daily is a good way to start.
Swimming can also be a worthwhile enjoyable exercise and as you progress, cycling can be another good way.
If you start by doing some of these things, the effects will benefit you immensely.
Being honest it is mostly common sense and the desire to want to reduce your high blood pressure.
