How to Replace a Roller Brush for XL Upright Vacuum Cleaners
- 1). Unplug the vacuum cleaner to prevent accidental operation while changing the roller.
- 2). Release the vacuum handle by placing your foot on the nozzle and pulling back on the handle until it moves freely. Pull the handle down until it is resting on the floor and turn the vacuum over so the nozzle is facing up.
- 3). Remove the five screws from the faceplate with the Phillips screwdriver and pull it off of the nozzle to expose the roller brush.
- 4). Grip both ends of the roller and lift it out of the nozzle. The belt connected to the roller brush will slacken when it is clear of the nozzle.
- 5). Slide the belt off of the roller brush pulley and dispose of the brush in a waste receptacle.
- 6). Grip the new roller brush and turn the bearings on both sides of the roller so they read "New." Oreck brush rollers have a "New" and "Old" setting on the bearings to adjust the roller brush when the bristles wear down.
- 7). Wrap the belt around the pulley on the roller brush and slide the bearings into the slots on the inside of the nozzle. The belt will provide some resistance when replacing the roller brush. Use a slow, steady motion to pull the belt. Do not yank it, or it may become dislodged from the pulley or the motor unit.
- 8). Turn the roller brush by hand. The brush should spin without any resistance. If you meet resistance, the belt has shifted on the roller brush pulley or from the motor unit. Remove the brush roller, adjust the belt and place it back in the nozzle.
- 9). Line the faceplate over the nozzle and replace the five screws. The unit is now ready for use.
