How to Plant Goldenseal Seeds
- 1). Look for an outdoor planting location in the mid to late fall with full shade and fertile, moist soil. Good locations include spots under trees such as poplar, oak, basswood and walnut.
- 2). Pull up all weeds, grass and other vegetation in the planting area.
- 3). Spread a 3-inch layer of compost on top of the area. Place a garden tiller at the edge of the site and set the blade depth to 4 to 5 inches. Push the tiller over the area to loosen the soil.
- 4). Dig a 1/2-inch deep hole using your finger and insert one goldenseal seed. Cover the hole with soil and pat the top lightly. Plant additional goldenseal seeds in the same manner, spacing them 3 inches apart.
- 5). Spread a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic mulch on top of the seeded area to prevent moisture loss during the winter months.
- 6). Water the area well until the soil is moist to a 1-inch depth. After the initial planting, watering is not required since rainfall provides enough moisture.
