How to Decorate With a Sage Sofa

    • 1). Arrange two club chairs opposite the sofa. Choose chairs upholstered with chintz cotton fabric in soft tones of blues, pinks or yellows. Window-pane plaid will also coordinate well with your sofa.

    • 2). Place several accent pillows on the sofa. Vary the sizes, and select printed cotton fabrics that reflect the colors of your club chairs. Stripes, plaids, small florals or toile are some choices for the pillows. Ribbon, buttons, tassels or fringe embellishments will also be effective.

    • 3). Place an area rug in front of the sofa. A natural fiber with a broad dark-green or burgundy border will provide pleasing contrast to your couch. A braided oval rug is another attractive option. Choose a mixture of colors that are slightly deeper shades than the colors in your chairs and accent pillows.

    • 4). Paint two small four-legged tables and a coffee table white. Sand the dried paint slightly for a weathered look. Place a table at both ends of the sofa, and center the coffee table in front of the sofa.

    • 5). Stack a few large vintage suitcases between the chairs to create an occasional table. The cases do not have to match. They will also provide extra storage.

    • 6). Set wrought-iron reading lamps on your small tables. Choose styles designed with simple lines, and top them with traditional white or ivory shades. Use brass fixtures if you prefer.

    • 7). Decorate your walls with handcrafted quilts, framed needlework or shadow boxes filled with vintage items such as old letters, postcards, lace gloves or period costume jewelry. Select paintings that portray traditional subjects with your color scheme in mind. Flowers, landscapes, pastoral scenes, portraits and dogs will complement cottage decor. Baskets or vintage plates can be effectively displayed on walls.

    • 8). Accessorize your tables with potted plants, vintage ceramic or wooden bowls or wooden decoys. Stack several small antique books on the coffee table, and fill mason jars with marbles or vintage buttons to display.
