How to Break Down Fractions on a Tape Measure
- 1). Pull out the tape measure and identify the side that has the lines at different lengths. The metric side will have little lines all the same size between the numbers.
- 2). Pick any two whole numbers as a reference point. For example, focus on the number "2" and the number "3" or "3 and "4" or so on. Notice how the largest of the lines appear right next to these whole numbers.
- 3). Find the next largest line, which will be directly in the middle of the two numbers. It is longer than the rest of the lines but not as long as the lines next to the whole numbers. This halfway point represents one-half of an inch.
- 4). Draw a black line to trace this half-inch mark, making it easier to spot. Remember this line is one-half because it is halfway between both numbers.
- 5). Locate the next longest lines which are going to be exactly halfway between the whole number and the half-inch mark. These represent ¼ of an inch each. For example, from the whole number to this first ¼ of an inch marker is ¼ of an inch and the one to the right of the half-inch mark represents ¾ of an inch.
- 6). Find the next longest lengths, which will be halfway between the whole numbers and the ¼ inch marks. These represent 1/8th of an inch each. Likewise, if your tape measure has any more smaller lines than these, those will be the 1/16th of an inch and the very smallest ones will be 1/32nd of an inch.
