How to Control Bugs That Collect on Outdoor Lights
- 1). Remove the light bulb on the light fixture. Screw a yellow light bulb into the socket, since yellow light repels insects.
- 2). Rake the area around the light fixture to remove compost, debris, decaying leaves and grass clippings. Certain insects, such as earwigs and flies, tend to use decaying organic matter for breeding areas.
- 3). Empty any receptacles holding stagnant water near the light fixture. Mosquitoes will breed in stagnant water and collect on nearby outdoor lights.
- 4). Plant marigolds near the outdoor light fixture. Insects hate the fragrance marigolds give off, so they will no longer collect on the light.
- 5). Pour 1 tbsp. of garlic juice and 5 tbsp. of water into a small spray bottle. Shake up the solution, then spray it on the outdoor light fixture and light bulb. The garlic solution will effectively repel insects for up to six hours.
