How to Petition a Court in Michigan
- 1). Obtain from the court clerk a standard form complaint. The court clerks in Michigan maintain standard forms of documents commonly used in civil lawsuits and other types of cases.
- 2). Complete the complaint form by commencing with the placement of your name as the plaintiff and identifying the person or entity you intend to sue as the defendant.
- 3). Insert a basic recitation of applicable and relevant facts into the complaint form.
- 4). Add a reference to the law and type of lawsuit you are bringing. For example, if the dispute between you and the defendant arises from a contract dispute, note that the case legally involved a breach of contract.
- 5). Sign the complaint. Michigan law does not require you to sign the complaint in a civil lawsuit in front of a notary public.
- 6). Take the complaint to the court clerk's office for filing. Hand the document to a staff member in the clerk's office who formally files the complaint for you.
