How to Screen for Symptoms of the Swine Flu in Health Care Workers

    Screening

    • 1). Healthcare workers should be educated in how to self-assess their symptoms. They should be educated regarding the onset of rapid progression, especially if they are experiencing shortness of breath. If they suspect they have contracted a respiratory illness, they should be removed from patient care and treated. A daily regimen of questioning healthcare workers should be established.

    • 2). Monitor staff for signs of weakness, persistent coughs or fevers. If you suspect an employee is ill, privately screen their symptoms by taking their temperature, listening to their chest for congestion and asking questions about symptoms like fatigue, headaches, chills, fever or an upset stomach.

    • 3). Inquire if any family members have missed work or school due to illness and what type of symptoms they may have exhibited. Healthcare workers who have family members that are infected with the swine flu virus are more likely to contract the illness at home.

    • 4). Quarantine the employee in a private room for a few hours if you suspect they may be coming down with the flu. Monitor the progression of their symptoms.
