Radon Lab Testing

104 38

    Why Test?

    • The U.S. surgeon general lists radon gas as the second-leading cause of lung cancer, estimated to be responsible for 21,000 deaths annually. The only means of detecting radon in a home is to test for it.

    Testing

    During the Test

    • During the test, home heating and cooling should be operated normally, and the house should be closed. The testing instrument must be undisturbed during the entire test. If there already is a radon-reducing system in the house, make sure it is operational during the test.

    After the Test

    • Once the radon test is completed, immediately return the instrument to the test lab. If high levels of radon are found, the EPA recommends having the house fixed by waterproofing basement walls, sealing open drains and placing plastic over exposed crawlspace floors. Removing radon completely requires installing a ventilation fan to pump air from under the basement slab to a roof vent.
