You can buy one commercially or make a customized fleece hammock for your ferret.
Another basic requirement for a new ferret is the house.
These too are available in all pet stores and online retailers however if you want to cut costs as well as customize the living space then you can make the house yourself.
Wire cages are the best option as they allow you to see through it at all times.
The animals prefer them too.
You also need to cater to the dietary needs of the animal after you bring a new ferret home.
These pets are carnivorous and thus they depend purely on a meat diet.
The diet needs to be rich in animal fats (omega 3 and 6), protein and fiber.
Though the animals are small they digest food very fast and hence need to be fed every 4 hours.
Understand the dietary needs and feeding patterns before you bring the animal home.
Avoid buying an animal that is less than 6 week as it will still be dependent on the mother for nourishment.
Ferrets need to drink plenty of water.
The cage or house that you build for the ferret must have a dish to store water.
Place a cloth or mat under the bowl in order to absorb any spillage.
Ferrets need a good litter box and you will also need to train them to use the box.
If you offer the animal fish then it could lead to a messy litter box.
These animals need to be given toys that they can play with when they are in their cages.
They are very energetic and playful and they appreciate the companionship of the toys.
You must vaccinate the animals before you bring them home.
The distemper vaccination is given when the animal is 6 weeks old; the second injection must be administered at 9 weeks and the last at 12 weeks.
It is imperative to offer these injections to the animal.
