How to Clean Skillets
- 1). Stand in front of a wastebasket and scrape the interior surface of the skillet using a scouring pad (or a rubber spatula, if your skillet is stainless steel). Remove any loose material and discard it into the wastebasket.
- 2). If material is baked or burnt on, place the skillet on your stove top and add 1/2 cup of tap water and 1 tsp. of dish soap to the skillet. Bring the water to a slow boil, turn off the heat and allow the skillet to soak until the material is loose enough to scrape off. Discard the water and the loose material.
- 3). Fill the kitchen sink with hot water and a 1/2 tsp. of dish soap. Place the skillet in the dish water.
- 4). Scrub the skillet’s interior and exterior using a scouring pad until clean. Rinse the skillet using lukewarm water, removing all traces of soap. Dry the skillet using a clean dish cloth or paper towel, store as usual and drain the kitchen sink.
- 5). If you’re cleaning a cast-iron skillet, place the skillet in an oven containing an automatic cleaning system, set the cleaning dial and allow the oven to clean itself; or place the skillet inside a standard oven set at 350 degrees and bake the skillet for two hours. Remove the skillet after the cleaning cycle ends or after two hours. To season the skillet, pour 1 tbsp. of vegetable oil onto a paper towel and lightly coat the interior of the skillet. Bake the skillet in a 350-degree oven for an hour. Remove the skillet and let it cool before storing.
