The Adventures of Being a New Homeowner

103 4
Everyone has different opinions about whether owning your own home is a wise investment.
With the current mortgage crisis in full swing, it makes one think twice, but it doesn't take long to figure out there really are a lot of benefits and joys in owning a home.
You can get great tax deductions, build equity and have enough space to meet your family's needs.
(1) Of course, for every Yin there is a Yang.
If you don't know what that means, consider this little event.
You buy a new home, get settled in and a big storm hits.
  The power goes out.
You and your family are sitting in the dark wondering what to do when the street lights come back on.
But you're still sitting in the dark.
What's wrong with this picture?  You need to find the electrical box to see if the main switch was thrown, and lo and behold, you're not sure where it is.
Finding it in the dark is really no fun.
These kinds of adventures you get to enjoy after buying a home are just the beginning.
What about when you need to turn the main water valve off?  Or how do you find the furnace reset button?  These kinds of little adventures can have you crawling in crawlspaces, fumbling in a dark basement, and heading for the closet to get a sweater until you figure out how to get the furnace running again.
The adventures never stop when you own a home.
A house is like a hungry monster that is always roaring, "Fix me...
fix me".
There are always plenty of repair jobs to do on a house from top to bottom.
You have to keep on eye on the roof and siding, paint the interior, fix the driveway cracks, and replace window seals.
Then of course there are the daily maintenance jobs you have to stay on top of in order to avoid spending thousands of dollars replacing instead of repairing.
  Yes...
the adventures never stop.
There's the time the spouse fell off the ladder and landed in the bushes (thank goodness).
Or the time the kids flushed Pampers down the toilet completely blocking the plumbing line.
And don't forget about the time the oven caught on fire (now that was scary).
The fire department was called and by the time they got there the fire was under control.
The firemen had to work real hard at not laughing at the burned up roast smoking in the sink.
If this sounds like owning a home is not any fun...
you're wrong.
The joy of home ownership comes at night when your family is sitting together in your remodeled family feeling safe and secure.
You have plenty of fun inviting friends over to enjoy a barbeque on the newly stained deck.
And there are lots of sighs of satisfaction when you look out the window with the new seals and can enjoy the flowers in your garden.
There are plenty of adventures to being a new homeowner.
  Some are challenging.
   Some are hilarious.
All are part and parcel of being a homeowner.
For most people, this is an adventure they would not miss for anything.
