How to Recover a Land Deed
- 1). Navigate to the tax appraiser or county clerk's Web site in your county. If you do not need a certified copy of your land deed, you may be able to print out a copy for free using an online database. Search using GIS or property maps and enter your address. You should find a link that will list tax information for your property. There may be a link for you to view your deed as well.
- 2). Visit your county clerk's office or recorder's office. In most counties, deeds are available through the county clerk. Some counties have a separate department for records such as land deeds.
- 3). Ask the clerk how to get a copy of your certified land deed. The clerk will provide you with the necessary forms and tell you what fees are required. The fees are usually pretty small for copies of records.
- 4). Fill out your forms and pay your fees. You can mail your forms to the appropriate address or deliver them to the county clerk's office in person.
- 5). Wait for your land deed to arrive in the mail. Even if you deliver your forms in person, the county clerk will mail you a certified copy of your land deed. In some cases you may be able to pay for expedited shipping if you need the fast delivery.
