    • 1). Stack two 18-inch cubic boxes on top of each other, and tape them together with paper packaging tape to create a pillar. Repeat this process to create a second pillar.

    • 2). Cut a 36-by-60-inch sheet of cardboard, and set it on the floor.

    • 3). Hot-glue the two pillars to the cardboard along the side edges, leaving a 24-inch gap in the middle.

    • 4). Paint the boxes and back piece with ivory paint to simulate mortar. Allow the paint to dry.

Dip a rectangular sponge into brick-colored paint, and then press it against the cardboard repeatedly to simulate bricks. Leave gaps between the bricks so that the mortar can show through. Let the paint dry completely.

    • 6). Tape three 20-by-20-by-5-inch boxes together along their narrow end with paper packing tape, making a long, thin box.

    • 7). Paint this box in your desired mantle color, either with a brush or by dabbing paint on with a rag for a more mottled texture. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 8). Glue the mantle onto the fireplace top with hot glue.
