Antibiotics are Always the Answer, Right?

101 6
How often have we seen antibiotics prescribed for the common cold or even a sore throat? I'm sure many of you out there are saying, lots, and I'm sure some are even wondering why that's a big problem. Being in nursing for many years now I've seen it all too often and it's up to us as nurses to educate our patients about the use of antibiotics and over the counter medications.

Antibiotics cure bacterial infections not viral infections like the common cold, the flu, or even a sore throat. If a patient asks you what is the best way to treat these illnesses you might suggest some simple remedies. Getting lots of sleep, drinking plenty of fluids, and taking medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen are great remedies that can alleviate some symptoms of these illnesses. You could even suggest that they use a humidifier which can help relieve symptoms of a cough or even a sore throat.

I stress the simple remedies for these conditions because antibiotics are not designed for upper respiratory illnesses. The overuse of them has caused a number of new health issues that can lead to more serious illnesses or even death. I hate to be so dire but antibiotic-resistance is becoming a major health issue, but on the bright side, it's something that with a little knowledge and education, we can reduce the risk of catching antibiotic-resistant diseases.

You may ask what exactly are antibiotic-resistant diseases and how can it be prevented? Basically, it's the ability of the bacteria to resist the antibiotic. The bacteria changes in some way which reduces the effectiveness of drugs designed to cure. Simply, if patients use over-the-counter medications or simple remedies for common ailments, it can greatly reduce the chance of catching and spreading antibiotic-resistant diseases.

Here are a couple quick tips on ways to help prevent antibiotic-resistance:
  • Prescribe an antibiotic, only, when it will help the patient and not because the patient wants or expects it
  • Use an agent that will target the pathogen
  • Make sure your patients are taking the appropriate doses and for the exact duration.
  • Instruct patients after antibiotic use to throw away any unused drugs
