- 1). Identify your video card. Check your computer's owner manual to see if it tells you what type of card your system uses. If you can't find it there, look in the "Display Settings" section of the Control Panel on your computer. Access this by going to "Start" then "Control Panel." If you are still having trouble determining the card type, there are a number of online utilities that can read your system remotely and tell you your card type.
- 2). Download the latest drivers for your card from the manufacturer's website. Ensure that you have the correct model before downloading. Save this file to your system.
- 3). Check for any special instructions in the drivers. If present, these are usually included in a file named README.TXT or something similar. These instructions will provide the steps you need to follow when installing.
- 4). Remove any old video card software. Click "Start" then "Programs" and look for your card's software in the list of installed programs. Click the "Uninstall" option if this is present. Otherwise, go to "Start," "Control Panel" and then click "Device Manager." Scroll down to where you see Video Drivers. Click the plus symbol to expand the list. Right-click on your old card's video driver in the list. Click "Uninstall." Click "OK" and then exit the "Device Manager."
- 5). Reboot your system. Log back in.
- 6). Follow the instructions from your system for installing the drivers. Most versions of Windows will be able to identify that new equipment has been installed and prompt you for the new driver's location. Select the downloaded driver file in the dialogue box when prompted by the system.
