How to Design a Storage Room

104 2
    • 1). Clear out the storage room. Clean the room so you have a clean slate. Measure the room so you know exactly how much space you have to work with.

    • 2). Take inventory of the items you plan to store in the room. Consider the type and size of items, noting any especially large items that will take up more space in the room.

    • 3). Decide where in the room to store larger items that won't fit on a shelf or in a drawer.

    • 4). Decide what types of storage systems will work best with your items. Common options include shelves attached to the wall, freestanding shelf units, file cabinets and hanging storage. Consider which types of storage will make the best use of the space available.

    • 5). Draw a sketch of the room, including the dimensions. Add in the proposed storage solutions. Note the size and dimensions of each storage item. For example, if you include a row of built-in shelves, include the length and the space between each shelf.

    • 6). Consider the smaller organizational tools you'll need to keep small items organized. This might include plastic totes that fit onto shelves, magazine holders and over-the-door organizers.

    • 7). Assess the lighting in the storage room. Sufficient lighting is important to easily locate and distinguish items stored in the room. Replace poor lighting or add extra lights in the room as needed.
