VOIP and Skype

So what is VoIP and how does it work? VoIP (Voice over the Internet Protocol) uses Internet connection to make a call, in other words VoIP is responsible transmitting voice communications over the internet. free call to be precise since you are not using any other service than a software to make the call happen and Internet as a source. Simply explained, it’s nothing more than data sharing over the Internet. Software like Skype uses audio codecs to sample a sound taken from the conversation, then compresses it so that they take less space and sends it to another client over the IP. Sound compression is a delicate process. Without compressing an Audio file it would take ages to send audio over the internet. Therefore Audio CODEC is needed to reduce the bandwidth used. Than receiver decompresses and plays the audio in real time. Therefore it is critically important to find a perfect balance between sound quality (since the audio compression weakens the Audio quality) and its size. There is a marketization process in between recorded sound is compressed into small pieces, stored in small data packets and being sent into over the IP. Skype uses different compression methods including G.729 and SVOPC.
Skype doesn’t rely on servers like other voice IP services. Data processing happens on client PC. But the job is done very intelligently and it doesn’t require much system resources. In fact the very idea is very intelligent. Why load servers with unnecessary tasks when each client PC can perform it without any special effort. Another Privilege of Skype over other VoIP is that Skype doesn’t have monthly fee.
As a result we get real-time Audio transmission over the internet. Skype is the leading VoIP provider today over 550 million accounts worldwide and over 40 million active users every day.
