Medieval Swords History, Changes Through the Middle Ages
- The Broadsword- This is the earliest type of Medieval sword reaching as far back as the 6th Century. A typical Broadsword has a two-edged blade which measured around 2-3 inches wide at its base and tapered down to a sharp point. This sword weighed about 3-5 points and its length ranged from 30-35 inches.
- The Falchion Sword- This type of sword was favored by many Medieval Knights who were on a Crusade. The Falchion had a short, heavy blade with a single edge, making it very similar to a heavy scimitar.
- The Greatsword- Greatswords were very large two-handed swords. The length of these swords ranged from 50 to 75 inches with a handle measuring around 18-21 inches. These long swords weighed anywhere from 6-10 pounds. The extended handle of a Greatsword allowed for the blade to be used in two hands.
- The Longsword- This sword is also known as the Bastardsword or a Hand and a Half sword. These ranged in length from 44 to 55 inches.
- The Scimitar- This type of sword includes a distinct curved blade that ends with an extremely sharp point. Scrimitars were most commonly used by the Saracens in the Holy Land who fought against the Crusaders.
- The Cutting sword- These swords were first used by early Medieval Knights but were also favored by the Vikings. This is similar to a slashing stroke but those quickly became useless against heavy body armor.
