    • 1). Take care of mildewed spots on cloth items as soon as you discover them. The University of Missouri warns that letting mildew remain on your clothing can cause a lingering musty smell. The fabric may even rot.

    • 2). Take the cloth items outdoors and brush off as much of the mildew as you can, says Good Housekeeping. This prevents the spores from circulating in your home.

    • 3). If the fabric will tolerate chlorine bleach, launder the clothing with chlorine bleach on the hottest water as indicated on the item's label. Soak all other cloth items in oxygen bleach for 30 minutes in hot water and launder as usual.

    • 4). Dry cloth items as soon as possible--letting them sit in your washer invites more mildew to grow. Good Housekeeping advises drying the items outside in direct sunlight.
