How to Troubleshoot Electrical Short Circuits

104 23
    • 1). Put on the safety glasses. Look for a fuse that is blown, as that is the sign of most shorts. Unplug the wire from the fuse holder spade connector and unplug the other end from the electrical component that it is providing power to.

    • 2). Set the ohm meter to the times one hundred scale. Connect the negative lead of the ohm meter to any ground source using its alligator clip. Connect the positive lead from the ohm meter to the end of the wire that is unplugged from the blown fuse in the same manner.

    • 3). Look at the dial of the ohm meter and record its reading. Remove all test leads and consider the wire not shorted if the needle did not move or moved slightly and fell back in place. Replace the wire with a new one if the meter read zero ohms or close to zero ohms.

    • 4). Replace the fuse with a new one and use the same methods to test any other circuits.
