Children's Activities – Your Rainy Day Readiness Kit

Few things can be more boring to a child than a gloomy and rainy day. In order to turn that indoor time into playtime, use a variety of children's activities to keep the whole family engaged and having fun. As children grow, they need intellectual stimulation and stimulation of motor skills. Using crafts and activities are a great way to help a child thrive. Adults often forget just how much fun it can be to shed the mantle of responsibility and finger paint with abandon, or glue a collage of pasta onto paper. A little imagination can go a long way.

When looking for good children's activities, try and assemble a bag of the things you will need for each project, and have a child pick which activity they would like to try. For example: one bag could include a ball, Styrofoam cups, rice and tape. This is a kit to build indoor bowling pins in a snap. Simply pour an inch or two of rice into the bottom of the cup, place an empty cup upside down on the first one, and tape securely together. There is the first bowling pin! Tape X's on the floor to mark the pin spots and off they go!

If a child has a literary streak, another kit that can be assembled to ward off the rainy day blues is this: In a bag, place markers or crayons, lined notebook paper, two sheets of heavy construction paper, pencils and brads. Have the child tell a story, and as they tell it write it down on the paper. Have them draw a picture about the story on the construction paper. Use the brads to hold the papers together, using the construction paper on the outsides. Viola! It's a child's very own storybook. Children's activities can be a treasured item in years to come.

Sometimes when it's dark and stormy outside, children's activities should include a variety of things that can keep them occupied for a long time. Try making a kit bag that includes several different games, such as marbles, jumping jacks, goggle eyes to glue on Popsicle sticks, and a deck of cards. Remember, too, that just before or after it rains is the very best time to blow bubbles. The humidity lets the bubbles stay in the air for a long time, and kids can make giant bubbles with household objects. Start looking forward to a rainy day with a fun bag of tricks.
