How to Use Magazines for Soundproofing
- 1). Pad the inside and outside of all doors in your home with magazines. Wrap the magazines carefully with masking tape to keep the pages from flipping open. Use thicker magazines to provide extra padding and block out more noise. Attach the magazines directly to the inside and outside of the doors.
- 2). Create insulation from old magazines. With the exception of the studs, the inside of your wall is generally empty. Even if you have some type of insulation, you need more. Slide the magazines directly into the wall, between the studs, cutting the magazines to the appropriate size. The magazines should fill the space and touch either side of the wall.
- 3). Tear out pages from the magazines and crumple the pieces. Use the pieces to fill any gaps or holes in the walls and windows. Even a small hole is large enough to let in excess sound and let sounds escape from your home.
- 4). Make a magazine mural on your ceiling. Tear pages from the magazines, and use scissors to cut out specific images and pages or pictures. Apply decoupage glue onto the ceiling, and lay down pieces of magazine. Keep adding more layers of glue and magazine pages, creating a mural on your ceiling that also blocks noise.
- 5). Block off the floors with more pages from your magazines. Vibrations from neighboring homes and the street can come through the floor. Lay the pages underneath your carpet or on top of the carpet, and cover with rugs. This helps block some of the noise.
