What Is Tea Timer in Spybot For?
- TeaTimer is one component of the anti-spyware program Spybot--Search & Destroy, created by PepiMK Software and distributed by Safer Networking Limited.
Spybot--Search & Destroy scans for adware, spyware, dialers, keyloggers, trojans and usage tracks such as certain browser cookies, and helps users remove any potentially malicious or suspect items it may find. - By default, TeaTimer runs in the background once Microsoft Windows starts. From that point on, TeaTimer stops malicious software before it begins to run on a Microsoft Windows computer, and guards against changes to the most important settings in Microsoft Windows.
- When any program running on the computer tries to change an important setting in Microsoft Windows, TeaTimer displays a warning. The user can decide whether a legitimate program should be permitted to make changes the user might have expected, or whether malware such as a virus, spyware or trojan should be blocked from making changes the user wasn't expecting.
- Among the important Microsoft Windows settings TeaTimer can protect are changes to Microsoft Internet Explorer. TeaTimer can block several kinds of changes to the web browser when the user doesn't expect or approve of the change.
Suspicious browser changes that TeaTimer might detect include attempts to modify Microsoft Internet Explorer's toolbars, menus, helper object plug-ins, ActiveX plug-ins, the user's preferred search engine and the user's home page that appears when opening a browser window. - TeaTimer can safely be enabled or disabled through the interface of the main Spybot--Search & Destroy program.
In the "Mode" menu at the top left corner of the Spybot--Search & Destroy window, click on "Advanced Mode" to make sure it's checked. In the "Warning" dialog box that appears, click "Yes."
At the bottom of the left hand column in the main window, click on "Tools," and then click on the shield icon labeled "Resident." On the page that appears, you can click on checkboxes to activate or deactive TeaTimer or the SDHelper tool. - TeaTimer has the file name "teatimer.exe" and is located in the "Program Files\Spybot--Search & Destroy" directory. The main Spybot--Search & Destroy application has the file name "spybotsd.exe" and is stored in the same directory.
Note the formatting of the name "Spybot--Search & Destroy." Rogue anti-spyware programs may mimic this name to disguise themselves as the same program. It is best to download "Spybot--Search & Destroy" from its official website.
