Planting

• Planting a lawn during the very late summer or early fall helps to establish it over two growing seasons before the harsh heat and dry days of summer begin. Knowing which U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone you are in will help determine the optimum time to plant.
  
  

Feeding

• Fertilizing the lawn is a season-long task, but different grass requires different patterns. Cool-weather grass is best fertilized with nitrogen in the spring and fall, while warm-weather grass takes to constant summer feeding.
  
  

Mowing

• Mowing too often or cutting the grass too short can send it into shock. A dull blade rips the grass tops instead of nice, clean cuts. Leave the grass clippings on the lawn after cutting for free fertilizer. Change the pattern of the mowing every few weeks so that the grass is cut from a different direction.
