How to Make Potato Beds
- 1). Apply 1 to 3 inches of compost to your garden soil. Compost is available at most garden centers.
- 2). Till the compost to a depth of 4 inches to incorporate it into the soil.
- 3). Plant the potato tubers every 9 to 12 inches. Space the rows 34 inches apart.
- 4). Build up soil around the plant as it emerges from the ground by hoeing soil towards the emerging plant. That creates ridges in the soil, called "hills," that protects the plant from wind and blistering cold weather. It also will prevent the potatoes from being exposed to sunlight, which scalds them.
- 5). Apply an inch of garden mulch or chopped straw to the bed once the plants appear to retain water.
