Choice of Air Conditioning

103 9
Ever since the introduction of the air conditioner into modern families and businesses, there has been many questions asked about which model of unit is best.
Some solutions are based upon personal preference while others are based on figures and fact.
If you wish to install one unit for the entire house for example, then a ducted unit is probably best.
These large ducted air conditioners can cost more to initially purchase, say $10,000 to $15000 with the roof fully insulated and the unit fully installed.
However, the running costs and the enjoyment of having the entire house cooled or heated with the flick of one switch can be amazing.
No more walking from a cool lounge room into a hot and sweaty toilet! You will barely hear any sound at all from a ducted air conditioner as the outside unit may be many meters away from the bedrooms.
On the other hand, sometimes you may spend 90% of your time in only one or two rooms in the house and a small window or split system air conditioner may be more suitable.
Box air conditioner units fit into a window sill and replace some or all of the original glass.
These tend to produce more noise than other units and are not the best selection for bedrooms.
Split systems however can be a great choice.
These run the noisy compressor outside of the room, while the cooling unit is mounted high on a wall.
These are great choices for bedrooms.
They tend to be more expensive if you were trying to purchase many split systems to perform the same function as one ducted unit.
Probably twice the price in many cases.
Keep in mind that ducted units are best for larger areas such as 100 square meters and above.
Small 10 or 20 square meter rooms would be better service by a window box unit or split system.
When making smaller unit choices, take into account the size of the room, any walls that face the sun for most of the day, and how well insulated the room is for cooling and heating.
These factors all determine the size of the unit to purchase and install.
The distance from the wall mounted unit to the compressor can be a serious factor as the cost of the copper piping between both units can be expensive and is often limited to around 7 or 8 meters.
Always keep your air conditioning filters clean.
All units need a filter check and clean every 2 to 3 months.
This can often be performed easily and quickly with a brush and vacuum cleaner.
