How to Season Stoneware With Beeswax
- 1). Place the stoneware vessel in a cold oven. Raise the temperature setting to 230 degrees F. Turn off the heat once the oven has been at 230 degrees F for 20 minutes.
- 2). Remove the hot stoneware from the oven with mitt-covered hands. Place the vessel on a trivet.
- 3). Rub a bar of beeswax over the interior surfaces of the stoneware. Revisit areas on the stoneware with the beeswax, if you notice the majority of it has been absorbed. Invert the stoneware on the trivet so the open end is facing down.
- 4). Lift the stoneware off the trivet once it has cooled enough to touch with bare hands. Roll the vessel from side to side on its rim to spread the hardening beeswax evenly. Continue rotating the stoneware until it has cooled to room temperature.
- 5). Strip the seasoning layer away by reheating the empty stoneware in a 230 degree F oven. Dump the old melted wax. Apply a new layer of beeswax sealant as before.
